Abhyangam is a full-body oil therapy performed by trained therapists using warm, herb-infused oils selected for your body constitution. Every session begins with a physician assessment, so the oil, the pressure, and the stroke pattern are matched to what your body actually needs. It is not a spa massage. It is a therapeutic treatment that calms the nervous system, loosens stiffness, and helps the body settle back into its own rhythm.
Minutes
Abhyangam is the classical Ayurvedic practice of applying warm medicated oil across the entire body with rhythmic, directional strokes. In Ayurvedic texts, it is described as a daily practice for long life, strength, and sound sleep, and as an essential preparatory step before deeper cleansing therapies.
The oil is not applied at random. Strokes follow the direction of hair growth along the limbs and move in circles over the joints, so that the oil is carried into the deeper tissues rather than resting on the surface. The warmth opens the channels, the oil nourishes dry and depleted tissue, and the steady rhythm signals the nervous system to move out of a state of alertness.
Softens tight muscles and eases the heaviness that builds up from long working hours.
Calms an overactive nervous system and helps the body settle into deeper rest at night.
Nourishes dry, rough skin and supports healthy blood flow to the extremities.
Lubricates the joints and reduces the cracking, stiffness, and restlessness linked to excess Vata.
Restores strength in the tissues and relieves the worn-out feeling that rest alone does not fix.
Each session follows a fixed sequence. Your physician decides the oil, the duration, and the pressure based on your assessment, so no two sessions are identical.
A short physician assessment of your constitution, complaints, and current dosha state, followed by selection of the right medicated oil.
The selected oil is gently warmed to body temperature so it absorbs easily and carries its herbal properties into the tissues.
The session opens at the head, neck, and shoulders, the region where most tension is held, to settle the mind before the full body work begins.
Two therapists work in synchrony across the limbs, back, chest, and abdomen with long strokes along the limbs and circular strokes over the joints.
A short herbal steam helps the oil penetrate deeper, followed by a warm bath and a period of quiet rest before you leave.
At Mukthi, we believe healthcare is more than just treatment. It is about restoring confidence, comfort, and peace of mind.
No session begins without a physician examining you first. Your constitution, digestion, sleep, and current complaints decide which oil is used and how firmly the therapists work.
Our medicated oils are prepared at our own facility using classical formulations and raw herbs we source and verify ourselves. We know how long each batch was cooked and what went into it.
Our therapists are trained in classical stroke patterns and work in pairs with matched rhythm and pressure. The technique stays consistent, which is what allows results to build over a course.

Abhyangam is gentle enough for regular use and safe for most healthy adults, but it is not suitable for everyone at every moment. A physician’s assessment before your first session tells us whether the therapy is right for you now, and which oil your body will respond to.

Answers to what patients most often ask before booking their first Abhyangam session.
No. A regular massage focuses on relaxation and uses generic oils. Abhyangam uses medicated oils chosen by a physician for your constitution, follows classical stroke directions along the limbs and joints, and is followed by steam and rest. The intent is therapeutic, not recreational.
Plan for about 90 minutes at the clinic. The oil application itself runs 60 to 75 minutes, with additional time for the herbal steam, warm bath, and a short rest afterwards.
For general wellbeing, once a week works well. For stiffness, pain, or sleep issues, our physicians usually recommend a course of seven or fourteen sessions on consecutive or alternate days, followed by a maintenance schedule.
A mild heaviness or drowsiness on the first day is common and expected. It usually passes after a good night of sleep, and most patients report feeling noticeably lighter from the second session onward.
Eat light and leave a gap of at least two hours after your last meal. Bring a change of clothes. Avoid scheduling anything strenuous immediately after your session.
Abhyangam is generally avoided during active menstruation. During pregnancy, only specific modified techniques are appropriate and only with physician approval. Speak to our physician before booking.
Abhyangam pairs well with several of our other therapies. Your physician can recommend the right combination for your condition.
