Udvarthanam is a dry powder therapy, in which warm herbal powders are worked firmly across the body in upward strokes by trained therapists. Every session begins with a physician assessment, so the powder, the pressure, and the course length are matched to what your body actually needs. It is not a cosmetic scrub. It is a therapeutic treatment that stirs sluggish circulation, lifts heaviness from the tissues, and wakes up a body that feels slowed down.
Udvarthanam is the classical Ayurvedic practice of rubbing warm medicated powder across the body with firm, upward strokes. Its name comes from the lifting, elevating quality of the movement. In Ayurvedic texts it is described as the therapy that reduces excess Kapha and Medas, firms the tissues, and restores lightness to a heavy, sluggish body.
The direction matters. Where oil therapies follow the line of hair growth, Udvarthanam works deliberately against it, so the friction generates heat at the surface and stimulates the tissue beneath. The dryness of the powder draws out what has accumulated, the warmth opens the channels, and the firm upward rhythm moves stagnation toward where the body can clear it.
Supports healthy weight management and relieves the dull, weighed-down feeling that comes with it.
Firms the tissue, smooths uneven texture, and improves tone across the thighs, arms, and abdomen.
Stimulates blood and lymphatic movement in a body that sits still for most of the working day.
Exfoliates dead skin, clears clogged pores, and leaves the surface clearer and better textured.
Lifts the sleepiness, mental fog, and low motivation that come with excess Kapha in the system.
Each session follows a fixed sequence. Your physician decides the powder, the pressure, and the course length based on your assessment, so no two sessions are identical.
A short physician assessment of your constitution, complaints, and current dosha state, followed by selection of the right herbal powder blend.
The chosen powder is warmed and, depending on your skin and constitution, worked into a paste with medicated oil or buttermilk before use.
A thin film of medicated oil is applied where needed so the friction reaches the tissue without abrading sensitive skin.
Two therapists work in synchrony across the limbs, back, and abdomen with firm upward strokes directed against the line of hair growth.
A short herbal steam opens the pores, followed by a warm bath that removes the powder and a period of quiet rest before you leave.
At Mukthi, we believe healthcare is more than just treatment. It is about restoring confidence, comfort, and peace of mind.
No session begins without a physician examining you first. Your constitution, digestion, skin condition, and current complaints decide which powder is used and how firmly the therapists work.
Our herbal powders are ground and blended at our own facility using classical formulations and raw herbs we source and verify ourselves. We know the grade of every batch and what went into it.
Udvarthanam is firm work, and too much friction does harm rather than good. Our therapists are trained to read the skin as they go and hold consistent pressure across every session of a course.

Udvarthanam is a firm, dry therapy, which makes it excellent for some constitutions and unsuitable for others. A physician’s assessment before your first session tells us whether your skin and system will benefit from it now, and which powder blend to use.

Answers to what patients most often ask before booking their first Udvarthanam session.
No. A salon scrub exfoliates the surface for cosmetic effect. Udvarthanam uses medicated powders chosen by a physician for your constitution, applies firm upward strokes against the hair direction, and is followed by steam and a warm bath. The intent is therapeutic, not cosmetic.
Plan for about 75 minutes at the clinic. The powder massage itself runs 45 to 60 minutes, with additional time for the herbal steam, warm bath, and a short rest afterwards.
It supports the process rather than replacing it. Udvarthanam improves circulation, tone, and the feeling of heaviness, and works best alongside the diet, movement, and routine your physician sets. Lasting change comes from the combination, not the therapy alone.
The pressure is firm, and the powder is coarse, so you will feel warmth and friction. Your therapist adjusts pressure as they go, and a thin layer of oil is used where the skin needs protection. Mild redness afterwards is normal and settles quickly.
Eat light and leave a gap of at least two hours after your last meal. Bring a change of clothes. Avoid waxing, shaving, or any harsh skin treatment in the two days before your session.
Udvarthanam is generally avoided during active menstruation and through pregnancy. It is also postponed if the skin is broken, inflamed, or very dry. Speak to our physician before booking.
Udvarthanam pairs well with several of our other therapies. Your physician can recommend the right combination for your condition.
